LONDON — Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has passed away.
The news was confirmed by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, who announced the development on social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Ahmad wrote:
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin.”
Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023, was previously the country’s military head of state from 1983 to 1985. He was widely known for his anti-corruption drive, efforts to strengthen national security, and attempts at economic reforms during his time in office.
The family is expected to release details of the burial arrangements soon, which will be conducted in line with Islamic rites.
