Era: 20th Century (1901–2000)

Colonial rule was formally established early in the century. Igbo society rapidly adapted, producing some of Nigeria’s earliest scholars, nationalists, and professionals. The mid-20th century marked the rise of Igbo political activism, leading to Nigeria’s independence in 1960. The tragic Biafran War (1967–1970) tested the Igbo spirit, but post-war recovery saw the Igbo excel in business, education, and global influence.
