Imo State was created on February 3, 1976, by the military regime of General Murtala Muhammed. It was carved out of the former East Central State.
Initially, it encompassed what are today Imo, Abia, and parts of Ebonyi states before subsequent state creations.
Historically, the territory of Imo is part of the ancient Igbo heartland, with cultural, spiritual, and trading links dating back centuries. Towns like Orlu, Owerri, and Okigwe have roots in early Igbo settlements, traditional governance systems, and vibrant market economies.
