Early Life and Education
Peters hails from Onicha-Olona in Delta State. He spent his formative years in various parts of Nigeria, including Enugu, Benin, and Lagos, which provided him with a diverse cultural exposure. He completed his secondary education at Federal Government College, Enugu, before proceeding to the University of Benin, where he graduated in 1989 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Regional Planning, majoring in Geomorphology.
Professional Career

Peters began his career in the early 1990s at Ocean and Oil Services Limited, where he gained foundational experience in petroleum trading and logistics. He later joined MRS Oil and Gas Limited, one of Nigeriaโs prominent downstream oil companies, rising to the role of Managing Director. His early experience exposed him to the intricacies of oil marketing, supply chain operations, and strategic resource management within the highly competitive Nigerian oil and gas sector.
In 1999, at the age of 33, Peters took a major entrepreneurial leap by founding Sigmund Communecci, a petroleum product supply and trading company. Under his leadership, Sigmund Communecci rapidly grew to become the largest operator of petroleum tank farms in Nigeria, with facilities capable of storing over 250 million liters of petroleum products on more than 100,000 square meters of landmass. The company also owned and operated the Abonnema Storage Terminal, significantly influencing Nigeriaโs downstream oil logistics.
In February 2008, Peters rebranded Sigmund Communecci to Aiteo Group, signaling a strategic shift toward becoming an integrated energy company. The rebranding marked the beginning of an aggressive expansion strategy encompassing upstream, midstream, and downstream oil and gas operations.
In 2014, Aiteo Group achieved a historic milestone by acquiring a controlling stake in Oil Mining Lease (OML) 29 and the Nembe Creek Trunk Line (NCTL) from Royal Dutch Shell Plc. The acquisition, completed after a highly competitive bidding process, positioned Aiteo as a major player in Nigeriaโs upstream sector.
- OML 29, located in the southeastern Niger Delta, spans 983 square kilometers and includes 11 oil and gas fields, including the historic Oloibiri Oilfield โ Nigeriaโs first commercial oil discovery in 1956.
- The Nembe Creek Trunk Line is a critical pipeline transporting crude oil from the Niger Delta to the Bonny Export Terminal.
Following the acquisition, Peters led Aiteoโs operational transformation, growing production to almost 100,000 barrels of oil per day, contributing over five percent of Nigeria’s total oil production, and establishing Aiteo as the largest indigenous oil-producing company in Africa.
In November 2023, Aiteo again broke new ground by launching a new crude oil grade called Nembe, in partnership with the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).
- Nembe crude is characterized by low sulfur content and a low carbon footprint due to advanced flare gas elimination processes, aligning with global environmental standards and attracting buyers from Europe.
- Importantly, the Nembe crude marketing venture is the first-ever such project solely operated by Nigerian entities (NNPC and Aiteo Eastern Exploration and Production Company Limited), symbolizing a new era of indigenous industry leadership.
In December 2023, Aiteo expanded its energy footprint beyond Nigeria, acquiring a substantial operational stake in Mozambique’s Mazenga Gas Block, Africaโs largest onshore gas reserve.
- Covering 23,000 square kilometers and containing an estimated 19 trillion cubic feet of natural gas, the acquisition was secured through agreements with Mozambiqueโs state oil company Empresa Nacional de Hidrocarbonetos (ENH).
- Aiteo has already launched an ambitious development plan involving field surveys, aeromagnetic studies, and geological data reprocessing.
Beyond oil and gas, Peters has diversified Aiteoโs business interests:
- He founded Aiteo Power, where he serves as Chairman, leading initiatives in electricity generation and distribution.
- The Aiteo Consortium and EMA Consortium, both spearheaded by Peters, have secured bids to acquire and manage three power-generating companies in Nigeria.
Mining and Resource Expansion: Bravura Holdings
Peters is also the Founder and CEO of Bravura Holdings, a vertically integrated mining conglomerate focusing on critical minerals such as:
- Platinum
- Gold
- Copper
- Lithium
- Steel
Bravura Holdings operates across several African nations, including Nigeria, Ghana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Mozambique, Cรดte d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, Tanzania, Sierra Leone, and Guinea-Bissau.
In 2019, Bravura secured a 3,000-hectare concession in Selous, Zimbabwe, for platinum mining, and expanded into lithium mining at Kamativi, one of Africaโs promising lithium sites. The company has also secured strategic concessions for cobalt mining in Congo and copper mining in Zambia.
Recognizing the rising importance of Africa in the global minerals supply chain, Peters deepened his mining sector influence through international collaboration. In February 2024, the Atlantic Council announced a three-year initiative on critical minerals in Africa, partnering with Aiteo.
- The initiative established a 12-person task force comprising key players from the U.S., Europe, and Africa across finance, development, and governmental sectors.
- Their mandate includes assessing Africa’s role in the global critical minerals supply chain, improving African countries’ participation, and catalyzing private sector engagement.
Personal Life and Philanthropy
Benedict Peters is married to Ella Peters, and together they have five children. A devout born-again Christian, Peters is a passionate financier and advocate for the spread of the gospel of Jesus Christ across the world. Alongside his wife, he manages several philanthropic organizations and initiatives dedicated to strengthening rural communities, improving educational access, and promoting responsible natural resource management.
In 2014, Peters established the Joseph Agro Foundation, a non-profit organization focused on enhancing the livelihoods of farmers in rural communities. Through the foundation, he provides farmers with critical tools, agricultural resources, employment initiatives, and education support systems. A major focus of the foundation is on promoting responsible water resource management among rural farmers, helping communities adapt more sustainably to environmental challenges.
Beyond his foundation, Peters has demonstrated a deep commitment to education. He serves as the Chairman of the Council of Federal University, Otuoke, overseeing the institution’s strategic development, governance, and policy formulation.
Peters’ commitment extends into the political arena, where he has been a longstanding supporter of democratic movements both in Nigeria and across Africa. He is recognized as a major donor to progressive political initiatives and pro-democracy processes across the continent. However, his strong political engagement has also attracted significant scrutiny and opposition, resulting in politically motivated investigations into his commercial activities.

Controversies and Legal Challenges
Throughout his career, Benedict Peters has encountered a series of legal challenges and controversies, largely arising from his prominence in the energy sector and his political and philanthropic activities. Some of these challenges stem from accusations tied to the volatile nexus of Nigerian politics, business competition, and international legal frameworks.
Peters has been named in indictments related to alleged criminal conspiracies involving former Nigerian officials. Notably, he has consistently denied any wrongdoing, attributing the allegations to orchestrated campaigns fueled by corporate and political rivalries aimed at undermining his business interests and personal reputation.
In 2021, Petersโ name surfaced in the internationally publicized Pandora Papers leak. He was falsely accused of bribing former Nigerian Petroleum Minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, by allegedly gifting her luxury overseas real estate to secure favorable oil contracts. Peters categorically refuted the allegations, labeling them as politically motivated fabrications with no basis in fact. He maintained that the accusations were part of a broader effort to discredit his achievements and disrupt his commercial standing both in Nigeria and abroad.
Petersโ denials were subsequently validated by formal legal proceedings. In 2017, the Court of Appeal of Nigeria ordered the immediate lift of an interim forfeiture order placed on Petersโ properties in the United Kingdom, which had earlier been obtained by Nigeriaโs Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). In delivering its judgment, the court accused the EFCC of engaging in “gross misstatements, concealment, and misrepresentation of facts,” concluding that Peters had been wrongfully targeted 1.
The narrative surrounding Peters’ legal battles took another significant turn in November 2023. The African Centre for Justice and Human Rights (ACJHR), a respected pan-African civil society organization, lodged a petition with the Nigerian House of Representatives, seeking a comprehensive legislative investigation into what it termed the “unjust defamation and judicial undermining” of Benedict Peters.
The petition, submitted through Kaduna State legislator Aliyu Mustapha Abdullahi, accused certain British officials and foreign investigative agencies of consistently ignoring Nigerian court rulings that had exonerated Peters. The ACJHR contended that these external actors were deliberately attempting to undermine Nigeria’s judicial sovereignty, and called upon the Nigerian Parliament to assert its authority and demand respect for its domestic legal processes.
Responding to the petition, the House of Representatives formally adopted it and announced its intention to launch a full inquiry into the matter by mid-November 2023. This development marked an important assertion of Nigeriaโs judicial independence, signaling growing resistance to foreign interference in domestic legal affairs.
Despite the protracted legal challenges, media scrutiny, and political attacks, Peters has remained resilient. He continues to focus on his core interests in business, philanthropy, and support for democratic values across Africa. His steadfastness in the face of adversity has further cemented his reputation as one of Africaโs most resilient and influential business figures.
Associations with Igbo Personalities
Throughout his career, Peters has collaborated with various individuals of Igbo descent in the oil and gas industry. Notably, he worked with Emeka Offor, another prominent Igbo businessman, in oil trading ventures during the early stages of his career. Additionally, his philanthropic initiatives have seen partnerships with Igbo leaders to promote education and economic development in Eastern Nigeria.
Conclusion
Benedict Peters’ journey from his early days in Ebonyi State to becoming a leading figure in Africa’s energy sector exemplifies determination and strategic foresight. Despite facing challenges, his contributions to Nigeria’s economic development and his philanthropic endeavors have left an indelible mark on the nation’s landscape.
