Dr. Anthony Ukpabi Asika (June 28, 1936 – September 14, 2004) was a prominent Nigerian academic, political scientist, administrator, and civil servant, best known for his role as the Administrator of East Central State during Nigeria’s military era.

Early Life and Education

Born in Onitsha, Anambra State, Asika was the son of Edward Obiozo Asika of the Ijelekpe Dynasty in Ogbeoza Village. He received his early education at St. Patrick’s College in Calabar and Edo College in Benin City. He then attended University College Ibadan (now the University of Ibadan), where he earned a degree in Political Science. Pursuing further studies, Asika attended the University of California, Berkeley, from 1961 to 1965, obtaining advanced degrees in political science.

Academic Career

Upon returning to Nigeria, Asika joined the University of Ibadan as a lecturer in Political Sociology, serving from 1965 to 1967. His academic tenure was marked by a commitment to political science education and research.

Political Career

Asika  held various significant positions, including Administrator of East Central State of Nigeria from 1967 to 1975 and member of the Supreme Military Council of Nigeria from 1970 to 1975. The couple had one son and two daughters In October 1967, during the Nigerian Civil War, General Yakubu Gowon appointed Asika as the Administrator of East Central State, following the secession of the Eastern Region under Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu. Despite the complexities of the civil war, Asika managed the state’s affairs until 1975, focusing on post-war rehabilitation and reintegration.

Later Career and Contributions

After his administrative tenure, Asika continued to serve Nigeria in various capacities. Notably, in 1985, he led a presidential delegation to Niger, Chad, and Cameroon to negotiate the reopening of Nigeria’s borders. His efforts in diplomacy and governance were recognized with national and international honors.

Personal Life

Asika was married to Chief Mrs. Chinyere Asika, and they had three children: Obi, Nkiru, and Uju. His family has continued his legacy of public service and contributions to Nigerian society.
