He is the fourth child in a family known for its strong ties to the community, moral values, and commitment to cultural heritage. From an early age, Gerald was exposed to the customs and traditions of the Igbo people, particularly those of Ojoto, which helped shape his understanding of leadership, service, and communal responsibility.
Growing up in Ojoto, Mbamalu was described by family and peers as an intelligent, respectful, and observant young man with a keen interest in the welfare of his community. His formative years were marked not only by formal education but also by informal learning through participation in local cultural festivals, family gatherings, and community meetings. This background laid the foundation for his eventual role as a custodian of culture and tradition.

To formalize his role, an official certificate of recognition was issued to him on February 20, 2018, by then-Governor Willie Obiano, in accordance with the Anambra State Traditional Rulers Act of 1981. Since his coronation, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu has actively participated in the preservation and promotion of Ojotoโs rich cultural heritage. His first Ofalla festival, an important royal celebration marking his reign, was held on January 2, 2021, followed by the New Yam Festival on August 5, 2021, which brought together indigenes and guests in a celebration of harvest, unity, and tradition.
