Alex Chioma Otti is a Nigerian economist, banker, investor, philanthropist, and politician, currently serving as the Governor of Abia State. Early Life and Education
Born on February 18, 1965, in Umuru Umuehim, Isiala Ngwa South Local Government Area of Abia State, Nigeria, Alex Chioma Otti is the son of the late Pastor Lazarus Weze Otti and Mrs. Mercy Otti. He attended Ngwa High School, Aba, and Secondary Technical School, Okpuala Ngwa, excelling in his West African Senior School Certificate Examination. Otti earned a First Class honors degree in Economics from the University of Port Harcourt in 1988 and later obtained an MBA from the University of Lagos in 1994. He furthered his education with executive programs at prestigious institutions such as Columbia Business School, Stanford Business School, Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, and INSEAD, France.
Banking Career
Otti began his banking career in 1989 with the Nigerian International Bank, a Citibank subsidiary. He gained experience at Nigerian Intercontinental Merchant Bank Ltd and Societe Bancaire Nigeria Limited (Merchant Bankers), a subsidiary of Banque SBA Paris. At United Bank for Africa (UBA), he served as Principal Manager overseeing corporate banking in the South Division, focusing on the oil and gas sector. In 2001, Otti joined First Bank of Nigeria as Assistant General Manager, advancing to Executive Director in 2005, responsible for over 140 branches in the South-South and South-East regions. In 2011, he became Group Managing Director/CEO of Diamond Bank Plc, leading a significant transformation until his voluntary retirement in 2014.
Political Career
Otti entered politics as the governorship candidate for Abia State under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) in 2015. Although the Court of Appeal declared him the winner, the Supreme Court later affirmed Okezie Ikpeazu’s election. Undeterred, Otti joined the Labour Party in 2022 and secured the governorship ticket unopposed. In the 2023 general elections, he won the governorship of Abia State, defeating his closest rival, Okey Ahiwe of the Peoples Democratic Party.
Achievements as Governor
Since assuming office, Otti has initiated significant reforms in Abia State. He declared a state of emergency in waste management, health, and education, leading to the clearing of refuse in major cities and the renovation of general hospitals across the three senatorial zones. His administration’s focus on infrastructure development includes the completion of critical road projects, enhancing transportation and commerce. Personal Life
A devout member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, Otti is married to Priscilla Otti, and they have three children.
