๐ Episcopal Appointment and Ahiara Crisis
On December 7, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI appointed Fr. Okpaleke as Bishop of Ahiara, Imo State. However, his appointment was met with fierce opposition from the clergy and laity of the Diocese, who protested his non-Mbaise origin. The diocese is predominantly Mbaise, and many of its faithful insisted the bishop must come from their ethnic group.
Despite being validly consecrated a bishop on May 21, 2013, in Owerri (since he was blocked from entering Ahiara), he was unable to assume canonical possession of the diocese. This triggered one of the most controversial ecclesiastical crises in modern Nigerian church history.
In a bold intervention, Pope Francis in 2017 demanded each priest in Ahiara sign a personal oath of loyalty to Bishop Okpaleke or face suspension. While many complied, resistance remained strong.
Ultimately, on February 19, 2018, Pope Francis accepted Okpalekeโs resignation. The Bishop of Umuahia, Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Ahiara.
๐๏ธ Bishop of Ekwulobia
In a remarkable turnaround, on March 5, 2020, Pope Francis created a new diocese, Ekwulobia Diocese, in Anambra State, and appointed Bishop Okpaleke as its first bishop. He was formally installed on April 29, 2020.
At Ekwulobia, Bishop Okpaleke focused on:
- Evangelization and spiritual renewal
- Promoting harmony among clergy and laity
- Faithful integration of Igbo cultural values with Catholic teachings
He emphasized the Church as “Godโs family, open to personal relationships with Jesus Christ and one another.”
๐ฅ Elevation to the College of Cardinals
On May 29, 2022, Pope Francis announced that Bishop Okpaleke would be created a Cardinal. This historic consistory took place on August 27, 2022, where he was elevated to the rank of Cardinal-Priest and assigned the titular church of Ss. Martiri dellโUganda a Poggio Ameno in Rome. He formally took possession of the titular church on February 5, 2023.
His appointment was globally recognized as a triumph of humility, patience, and fidelity to the Church.
On October 7, 2022, Pope Francis appointed him a Member of the Dicastery for Laity, Family and Life, granting him influence on global Catholic matters concerning family and the laity.
