Early Life and Education
Chuba Ikpeazu was born in 1917 in Onitsha, Anambra State. He began his education at St. Mary’s School, Onitsha (1922-1930), and later attended Christ the King College, Onitsha (1934-1937). Initially setting his sights on the medical field, he studied at Yaba School of Pharmacy, Lagos (1938-1941). However, his ambitions shifted to law, prompting him to travel to England, where he attended the University of Cambridge (1942-1945) and the University of London, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (Honors) and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B Honors).
Professional Career
Ikpeazu started his career as a pharmacist at Lagos’s General Hospital but eventually transitioned into law, establishing a respected career in legal practice. His diligence and skill earned him the prestigious title of Queen’s Counsel (QC) in 1961, a rare honor for Nigerian lawyers of his time. By 1964, he was appointed as a Judge of the High Court of Justice, a role he held until his retirement in 1983. Throughout his judicial career, he was known for his strong sense of justice, integrity, and commitment to upholding the rule of law, earning respect in Nigeria’s legal community.
Role in Sports Administration
Following his retirement from the judiciary, Ikpeazu was appointed Chairman of the Nigerian Football Association (NFA) from 1988 to July 1989. His leadership was pivotal during a transformative period for Nigerian football, as he worked to establish policies that improved the administration and overall structure of the sport in Nigeria. His tenure at the NFA came during a time when Nigerian sports administration faced various challenges, and his experience and commitment contributed to a stronger organizational foundation.
Personal Life and Family
Chuba Ikpeazu was married to Angeline Inoma, and together they raised a large family with three sons and six daughters. His children, inspired by his example, pursued careers in various fields, with his daughter Lynda Chuba-Ikpeazu becoming a notable figure in Nigerian politics and the first winner of the Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant in 1986.
Legacy and Later Years
After his tenure with the NFA, Ikpeazu continued to be regarded as an influential figure in both the legal and sports sectors in Nigeria. His dedication to public service and commitment to excellence set a high standard for his peers and successors. Though he occasionally faced criticism typical of public figures in such high-stakes roles, his integrity and contributions overshadowed these challenges. He passed away in 1989, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership and service.
