Early Life and Education
Emma Ugolee was born on October 4, 1975, in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, located in the north-central region of Nigeria. He hails from Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area in Abia State, southeastern Nigeria. Growing up in a culturally diverse environment helped shape his perspective and appreciation for media and storytelling.
He pursued his tertiary education at the Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT), where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Economics.
Career
Emma Ugolee’s journey into the media industry began somewhat serendipitously. In 1999, while still a student at ESUT, he appeared as a guest on a television talk show called Just Gisting, aired on Minaj Broadcast International (MBI). The appearance was to promote an upcoming school event—the ESUT Awards. The station’s owner, Mike Ajegbo, was so impressed by Emma’s composure and charisma that he offered him a job upon graduation.
Shortly afterward, Ugolee became the host of Just Gisting, the very show on which he had once been a guest. He went on to create and anchor other programs, including the iconic MBI Top 10 Countdown—Nigeria’s first all-music video countdown show. This show played a vital role in elevating the early careers of now-famous Nigerian artists such as Sound Sultan, Ruggedman, Mode 9, and D’banj.
In 2002, to strengthen his craft, Ugolee attended the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) Training School for broadcasters.
In 2004, he transitioned into the corporate world, joining Globacom, one of Nigeria’s leading telecommunications companies, as an executive in the marketing communications department. There, he created and presented The Glo Show, a television program promoting the brand.
By 2011, Ugolee had ventured into independent television production. He launched his own talk show titled The Gist, which aired on HipTV from 2015 to early 2017 before moving to AIT (Africa Independent Television), where it continues to run nationwide.
In 2018, he partnered with Ossy Achievas to launch the Nigerian Social Media Awards, an initiative created to celebrate and reward outstanding Nigerians who use social media in impactful and innovative ways.
Authorship
In 2019, Emma Ugolee published his debut book titled A Hundred Random Light Bulbs. The book is a collection of philosophical musings and insights aimed at helping readers reflect more deeply on life’s everyday challenges and lessons. It was well received and praised for its motivational tone and relatable storytelling.
Health Challenges
Emma Ugolee has publicly shared his deeply moving and ongoing health journey. In 2011, he was diagnosed with Stage 5 chronic kidney failure, the most critical level of the disease. In February 2012, he underwent a kidney transplant in India, but unfortunately, the procedure was unsuccessful.
Since then, he has depended on dialysis treatment three times a week to stay alive while awaiting another transplant opportunity. His fight against kidney failure has required over 100 surgeries and medical procedures, costing him and his family over $3 million.
Despite these hardships, Emma has remained resilient and has used his platform to raise awareness about organ failure, inspire others facing health challenges, and highlight the gaps in Nigeria’s healthcare system.
Marital Life
Emma Ugolee got married on September 13, 2013, but the marriage ended in divorce in 2016. While he tends to keep his personal life private, he has shared reflections on love, healing, and self-growth in interviews and on social media, often drawing lessons from his experience.
