Controversy

Prince Maduabuchi Enyi, popularly known as Governor Eziokwu, became embroiled in a significant legal controversy when he was sued, detained, and later released on bail. The case, presided over by Hon. Justice F. I. Duroha-Igwe at the Owerri High Court on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 (Suit No. HOW/52C/2013), involved allegations brought by the State against him. He was accused of hostage-taking, a charge under Section 3 of the Imo State Prohibition of Hostage Taking and Related Offences Law No. 4 of 2009.

Governor Eziokwu was accused of kidnapping an ex-militant and faced multiple charges, including allegations of murder, kidnapping, and felony. However, he claimed that these accusations were orchestrated by a group of politicians, gang members, and an ex-militant seeking to silence him due to his outspoken advocacy for the common man and his condemnation of corruption.

The court eventually struck off four of the five charges against him, citing a lack of evidence and the submission of unsigned documents by his accusers. Despite the accusations, the remaining charge did not hold up in court. Governor Eziokwu maintained his innocence throughout the proceedings and consistently appeared in court as required until the case was resolved in his favor in 2017.

The controversy reportedly began during a visit to his hometown for a burial, where an altercation occurred after a young man from his village damaged his car. Governor Eziokwu reported the incident to the police, but this action allegedly sparked a vendetta. The young man, along with his political allies, reportedly fabricated allegations against him, leading to his arrest and prosecution.

Governor Eziokwu has remained vocal about his ordeal, decrying the use of political power to suppress dissent and exposing corruption. This case has been used by some to label him an ex-convict, despite his exoneration in court. His resilience and refusal to back down from challenging corruption have made him both a polarizing and influential figure in Nigerian society.

These accolades reflect his influence and contribution to digital media and Igbo culture.

Nationality
