Early Life and Education

Francis Ogbonna Erishi Nwifuru was born on February 25, 1975, in Oferekpe Agbaja, Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. He was born into a polygamous family headed by Chief Nwifuru Nwamkpu and spent much of his early life in his home community. His upbringing was marked by a combination of formal education and traditional pastoral activities, including rearing cattle with his brothers.

Nwifuru began his education at Oferekpe Agbaja Community Primary School in 1991 and later attended Community Secondary School, Nwofe Agbaja, completing his studies in 1999. Despite facing interruptions in his educational journey, he persevered and pursued higher education at Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki, where he studied Building Technology and Woodwork.

In June 2021, he furthered his education by earning a Master’s degree in Procurement, Logistics, and Supply Chain Management from Salford University in Manchester, United Kingdom.

Political Career

Francis Nwifuru’s political journey began in 2007 when he contested for a seat in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, though he did not succeed at that time. However, his dedication to public service and grassroots engagement earned him an appointment as an Ex-Officio State Executive Member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State.

In 2011, Nwifuru contested again and won, representing Izzi West Constituency in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly. During his first term, he served as Deputy Chief Whip and chaired the House Committee on Lands, Survey, Urban Development, and Environment. His contributions to legislative advocacy and policy development earned him reelection in 2015. That same year, he was elected as the 5th Speaker of the Assembly. In 2019, Nwifuru made history by being reelected as Speaker, becoming the first individual to hold the position for two consecutive terms in Ebonyi State.

In 2020, Nwifuru joined the All Progressives Congress (APC) and became the party’s flagbearer for the 2023 gubernatorial election. His campaign emphasized rural development, infrastructure, and social welfare. He won the election with 199,131 votes cast across the state’s 13 local government areas, succeeding Governor Dave Umahi as Governor of Ebonyi State.
