Nnedimma Nkemdili Okorafor was born on April 8, 1974, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Igbo Nigerian parentsโDr. Anthony C. Okorafor, a surgeon, and Professor Edith Okorafor, a pharmacist and public health educator. Her parents emigrated from Nigeria to the United States in 1969 to further their education but were unable to return due to the Nigerian Civil War. Their ancestral home is believed to be in Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, although Okorafor has not publicly named her specific hometown or Local Government Area (LGA).
Raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, Nnedi was the third of four children and spent many school holidays visiting family in Nigeria. She often describes herself as โNaijamerican,โ an identity that deeply informs her writing and worldview.

As a high school student, Nnedi excelled in tennis, track, science, and math. She originally aspired to be an entomologist.
