Nnedimma Nkemdili Okorafor (born April 8, 1974) is a groundbreaking Nigerian-American writer whose literary worlds fuse African mythology, speculative science, and social justice. As the creator of the celebrated Binti series and Who Fears Death, she has redefined Black speculative fiction, while inventing her own genreโ€”Africanfuturism. Her personal journey, marked by illness, identity shifts, and cultural fusion, mirrors the themes in her award-winning novels, comics, and screen adaptations. But behind the literary acclaim is a story rich with resilience, academic excellence, and family pride rooted in the Igbo homeland of Nigeria.

Early Life & Family Background

Nnedimma Nkemdili Okorafor was born on April 8, 1974, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Igbo Nigerian parentsโ€”Dr. Anthony C. Okorafor, a surgeon, and Professor Edith Okorafor, a pharmacist and public health educator. Her parents emigrated from Nigeria to the United States in 1969 to further their education but were unable to return due to the Nigerian Civil War. Their ancestral home is believed to be in Anambra State, southeastern Nigeria, although Okorafor has not publicly named her specific hometown or Local Government Area (LGA).

Raised in the suburbs of Chicago, Illinois, Nnedi was the third of four children and spent many school holidays visiting family in Nigeria. She often describes herself as โ€œNaijamerican,โ€ an identity that deeply informs her writing and worldview.

Education & Life-Altering Experience

As a high school student, Nnedi excelled in tennis, track, science, and math. She originally aspired to be an entomologist.

At age 19, she was diagnosed with scoliosis, and a complex surgery led to temporary paralysis. During recovery, she began writing short fiction, which launched her literary journey.
