Prince Chidiebere Philip Ezeani was born on October 9, 1993, in Awka-Etiti, a town in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, Nigeria. Raised in southeastern Nigeria, he was deeply immersed in the cultural and religious traditions of the Igbo people. From an early age, he displayed a strong sense of spiritual devotion. However, his journey to the Catholic priesthood would take a path far from the ordinaryโ€”marked by challenges, courage, and a divine calling that led him beyond the borders of his homeland.

Priestly Vocation and Formation

Prince Chidiebere Philip EzeaniFr. Ezeaniโ€™s journey to the priesthood is an unconventional and deeply personal testimony of grace. In his own words, โ€œIf I had stayed in Nigeria for formation, I wouldโ€™ve been expiredโ€”not ordained.โ€ He openly speaks about the challenges and toxicity embedded in some Nigerian seminary systemsโ€”emphasizing favoritism, emotional suppression, and institutional trauma that often threaten the genuine vocational journey of aspiring priests.

Instead of undergoing priestly formation in Nigeria, he embarked on a transnational vocational path that led him first to the Philippines and then to South Korea. He studied theology at the SVD Seminary in Tagaytay City, Philippines, and completed his formation under the Kkottongnae Brothers of Jesus in South Korea, where he experienced a more human-centered, emotionally balanced, and spiritually enriching formation environment.

He credits his survival and ordination to the providence of God that removed him from what he calls the “trauma camp” culture of some local seminaries. His journey reflects the reality of many African vocations hindered by flawed systems but revived through divine intervention and international formation.

Ordination and Ministry

Prince Chidiebere Philip EzeaniFr. Prince Chidiebere Philip Ezeani was ordained to the Catholic priesthood on January 7, 2025, by Bishop Simon Kim Jong-Gang, the Bishop of the Diocese of Cheongju. He holds the rare distinction of being the first foreigner to be ordained a priest in the Diocese of Cheongju, South Korea.

Following his ordination, Fr. Ezeani celebrated his first Thanksgiving Mass in Korea on January 16, 2025, at 5:30 PM. His Korean parish community, including the Saint John the Evangelist School of Theology (SJEST), joined him in joyous celebration and prayer, commending his faith and courage.

He later returned to Nigeria to celebrate his first Thanksgiving Mass on February 23, 2025, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Awka-Etiti, Anambra State. The celebration was preceded by a football match and a seminarian night on February 22, 2025, highlighting his blend of tradition, youthfulness, and innovation. The reception took place at the compound of Late Chief Michael Ezeani, Nkolofia Village, Awka-Etiti.

Current Work and Affiliation

Fr. Ezeani currently works at the Pope Francis Center, Kkottongnae, Palo, Leyte, while remaining canonically incardinated in the Diocese of Cheongju. His ministry is shaped by international exposure, pastoral sensitivity, and an unyielding commitment to spiritual integrity.

Beliefs and Public Reflections

Prince Chidiebere Philip Ezeani ib1Fr. Ezeani is known for his transparency, boldness, and progressive voice within the Catholic community. He sparked widespread attention with a reflective post stating, โ€œI am not a Nigerian Catholic priest. I belong to a Korean diocese and congregation.โ€ He explained that his priesthood is canonically Korean, and if he dies, he will be buried in Koreaโ€”not in Nigeria.

While some critics misinterpreted his message, he later clarified that his statements were not meant to condemn the Nigerian Church or its formators but to highlight the urgent need for reform in certain aspects of local priestly formation.

โ€œSeminary shouldnโ€™t be trauma camp with cassocks. They should form shepherds, not forge survivors.โ€

He insists that being โ€œNigerian by birthโ€ and โ€œKorean by ordinationโ€ does not dilute his love for his heritage. His message is one of hope and renewal, calling on Church leaders to prioritize psychological maturity, spiritual freedom, and pastoral accompaniment.

Legacy and Vision

Fr. Prince Chidiebere Philip Ezeani represents a new generation of clergyโ€”globally trained, intellectually sound, emotionally intelligent, and unafraid to speak the truth. His story is not just about becoming a priest, but surviving a system that nearly quashed his calling.

His life and ministry testify that vocation is not about nationality or geography but about divine calling and obedience.

Quote

โ€œYour mission is not where you were born. Your mission is where you are sent. And donโ€™t get it twistedโ€”being canonically Korean doesnโ€™t mean Iโ€™m less Nigerian. I still pray in tongues with pidgin English when the Spirit moves!โ€
