Early Life and Family Background
Stella Chinyelu Okoli was born into a family of industrious Igbo traders. Her father, Felix Chinedu Okoli, was a notable merchant in Nnewi, while her mother, Gladys Ifeoma Okoli, managed the family’s businesses. Stella grew up in Kano during a period of significant commercial activity, which exposed her to the challenges and opportunities of business. She credits her early exposure to business ethics and discipline to her parents.
Stella was raised alongside four siblings, each of whom pursued various professional endeavors. She often cites her family’s entrepreneurial spirit as a foundational influence in her career.
Education
Stella’s educational journey began at All Saints Primary School, Onitsha, and later Ogidi Girls’ Secondary School, where she developed a passion for science. She pursued her tertiary education in Pharmacy at the University of Bradford, United Kingdom, graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. Her thirst for knowledge led her to obtain a Master’s degree in Industrial Pharmacy from Chelsea College, University of London, in 1971.
Career Journey
Early Career
Before founding her company, Stella worked as a pharmacist at notable establishments such as Middlesex Hospital in London and Park Davies Nigeria Limited. These roles provided her with invaluable experience in pharmaceutical processes and healthcare systems.
Founding of Emzor Pharmaceuticals
In 1977, Stella Okoli founded Emzor Chemists, a small retail pharmacy in Lagos. Her vision expanded beyond retail, and by 1984, she launched Emzor Pharmaceuticals, transitioning into the manufacturing of affordable, high-quality medicines. Under her leadership, the company grew to produce over 140 products, including the widely used Emzor Paracetamol.
Today, Emzor Pharmaceuticals operates globally, with manufacturing plants across Africa and distribution networks extending to Europe and Asia.
Controversies and Challenges
Stella Okoli has faced significant challenges in her career, particularly relating to the broader issues within Nigeria’s pharmaceutical industry. In 2018, Emzor Pharmaceuticals was briefly embroiled in a national controversy during a crackdown on the misuse of codeine-containing syrups. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) temporarily suspended the company’s operations following allegations of the product’s misuse contributing to drug abuse. However, after a thorough investigation, the suspension was lifted, and Emzor Pharmaceuticals was cleared to resume operations. This incident underscored the systemic challenges pharmaceutical companies face in combating the societal issues of drug abuse while maintaining high-quality standards.
Adding to the somber chapters of her public life, on July 30, 2024, during her 80th birthday celebration in Lagos, Nigerian music legend Onyeka Onwenu collapsed on stage after delivering a performance at the event. She was immediately rushed to Reddington Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead. Onwenu, who was 72 at the time of her passing, had been a close friend of Stella Okoli, making the incident particularly devastating for her and attendees. This tragic occurrence not only marked a heartbreaking moment but also placed the spotlight on the importance of health awareness during high-profile celebrations.
Personal Life
Stella Okoli is married to Dr. Chike Okoli, a medical doctor. Together, they had three children, including Chike Okoli Jr., who tragically passed away in 2006 due to an undiagnosed heart condition. This loss inspired the family to establish the Chike Okoli Foundation, dedicated to raising awareness about cardiovascular health and entrepreneurship.
Rumors of a strained relationship with other family members in the pharmaceutical sector have occasionally surfaced but remain unverified.
