Ebube Nwagbo: My Journey, Challenges, and Triumphs in Nollywood

Educational Background

I began my educational journey at the Federal Polytechnic, Oko, where I earned both my OND and HND. I later furthered my studies at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, where I majored in Mass Communication. I also pursued a diploma in Law at the University of Benin. Law had always been my passion, but after five unsuccessful attempts at JAMB, I opted to take the Poly JAMB route instead.

Growing Up

Growing up, I loved watching television, but I never aspired to be an actress. My dream was to appear on TV as a lawyer or a broadcaster. When those dreams didn’t pan out, I decided to explore acting. I believed I could perform as well as those I saw on television. More importantly, I needed something that would provide financial stability, which ultimately led me to acting.

Getting Into Nollywood

My entry into Nollywood was through a school friend, Obinna, who informed me about an audition in Onitsha organized by the Amaco brothers. I attended, and that was the beginning of my acting career. My debut movie, Arrested by Love, featured notable actors like Jim Iyke and Pete Edochie.

Initial Fears and Challenges

I faced significant fears initially. I doubted my abilities, but the director, producer, and crew had faith in me and encouraged me to believe in myself. Unexpectedly, I was offered the lead role, which was daunting at the time. Starting in Eastern Nigeria was a challenge, as I had to overcome stereotypes and prove myself in the Lagos scene. It wasn’t easy, but I’m proud to have shown that talent from the East can shine anywhere.

Addressing Rumors About the Amaco Brothers

The rumors about dating the Amaco brothers are false. I didn’t know them personally before the audition. Obinna, who worked for them, informed me about the opportunity. The director, Ifeanyi Akwedo, believed in my potential and cast me for the role. I earned about ₦40,000 for my first movie.

Handling Male Fans

Male fans can be overwhelming, but I manage them by keeping firm boundaries. Many call to express admiration or friendship, but I often tell them I’m married to deter persistent advances. Even if I were married, I believe they would still try to pester me.

Love Life and Marriage

Marriage is a dream for every woman, and I’ve prayed to God for the right timing in my life. I’m currently dating Ogbonna Kanu, whom I met in Lagos through a friend. As for when marriage will happen, only God knows.

On Nollywood and Drugs

The issue of drugs in Nollywood is personal, not necessarily tied to financial struggles. Even in tough times, I wouldn’t resort to drug trafficking or crime. It’s about personal values, not just external circumstances.

On Nollywood and Lesbianism

Lesbianism is not exclusive to Nollywood—it exists everywhere. However, because it involves Nollywood, it becomes news. I’ve received advances from women, including married ones, but I’ve made it clear that I’m not interested. Politeness doesn’t help in such situations, so I’ve learned to be direct.

On Stereotyped Storylines in Nollywood

The audience in Nigeria plays a role in the prevalence of stereotypical storylines. Love, rituals, and other everyday themes resonate more with viewers than experimental genres like action or sci-fi. International movies might rely on special effects, but here, relatable narratives drive viewership.

Bad Habits

I have a habit of biting my nails and scratching my eyes, regardless of the situation. It sometimes ruins my makeup, but I can’t help it.

Greatest Body Asset

I’d say my hips. Many women in Nigeria admire a well-proportioned figure, and I’m grateful for mine.

Ideal Man

My ideal man is God-fearing, has a great sense of humor, and is highly understanding.

What I Love About Nigerian Men

Their generosity—they know how to spend on their partners.

What I Dislike About Nigerian Men

They gossip far too much.

Nollywood Stars and Failed Marriages

The high rate of failed marriages in Nollywood is concerning. I don’t believe anyone enters marriage intending for it to collapse, but it happens. It’s a sobering thought, and I pray to avoid such an outcome in my own life.
