Emezi was born to a Nigerian Igbo father and a Tamil mother from Malaysia. They are the second of three children, with a sister, Yagazie Emezi, who is a noted photographer and visual artist. The family practiced Catholicism; several of Emezi’s great-aunts were Carmelite nuns, and a great-uncle served as the first person of color bishop in Malaysia. The name ‘Akwaeke’ translates to “the egg of a python,” referencing a deity in Igbo culture. From an early age, Emezi was an avid reader, immersing themselves in both African literature and British children’s books by authors such as J.K. Rowling, Enid Blyton, and C.S. Lewis. 2
Education and Early Career
At 16, Emezi relocated to the United States to pursue higher education. They initially enrolled in veterinary school but later shifted focus, earning a Master of Public Administration from New York University. In 2015, Emezi was awarded the Miles Morland Writing Scholarship, which supported their burgeoning literary career. 3
Literary Achievements
Emezi’s debut novel, “Freshwater” (2018), is a semi-autobiographical narrative that delves into the life of Ada, an ogbanje—a term from Igbo cosmology referring to a spirit that undergoes cycles of birth and death. The novel received critical acclaim for its innovative exploration of identity and was longlisted for several prestigious awards. In 2019, “Freshwater” was nominated for the Women’s Prize for Fiction, marking the first time a non-binary transgender author was considered for the award.
Following this success, Emezi published “Pet” (2019), a young adult novel featuring a transgender protagonist named Jam, set in a society that denies the existence of monsters. The prequel to “Pet,” titled “Bitter,” was released in February 2022.
