Research Contributions

Nwabueze is renowned for his critical work on African theatre, especially the Igbo masquerade drama. In โ€œIgbo Masquerade Drama and the Origin of Theatre: A Comparative Synthesisโ€, he challenges Western-centric narratives, arguing for the recognition of African performance traditions as complex and theatrical.

His essay, โ€œTheoretical Construction and Constructive Theorising on the Execution of Ikemefuna in Achebeโ€™s Things Fall Apartโ€ (published in Research in African Literatures), introduced the concept of critical dualism, interpreting Okonkwoโ€™s actions as both divine ordination and psychological compulsion.

His plays, such as Spokesman for the Oracle and The Dragonโ€™s Funeral, integrate Igbo culture, cosmology, and values. His satirical play A Parliament of Vultures critiques political corruption in Nigeria. He also advocates for professional standards and theoretical grounding in theatre production.
