Honorable Justice Francis Ome Nwokedi (born July 6, 1925, in Makurdi, Benue State) was a distinguished Nigerian jurist who served as a Judge of the High Court in Nnewi, Anambra State. He received his early education at St. Mary’s Primary School in Onitsha and St. Gregory’s College in Lagos. Early Life and Education
Born on November 3, 1926, in Iyi-Enu Ogidi, Anambra State, Nwokedi began his education at Holy Trinity School, Onitsha (1934โ1939), and continued at St. Gregory’s College, Lagos (1940โ1945). He pursued higher education through the University of London’s external program, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree. Subsequently, he attended the Inns of Court Law School in London (1956โ1959), where he completed his Bar finals in December 1958 and was called to the Bar in 1959. During this period, he also studied at the London School of Economics and Political Science, obtaining an LL.B. with honors.
After being called to the bar, he returned to Nigeria, where he initially practised law under the mentorship of the late Justice Chuba Ikpeazu and later under Dennis Osadebey. His career progressed as he joined the Federal Ministry of Justice, where he served as a Crown Counsel and later as the Director of Public Prosecution for East Central State.
In 1972, Nwokediโs legal career took a significant turn when he was appointed as a judge. He made history as the first Igbo judge in Okigwe and later served as the Acting Chief Justice of East Central State. He also held the position of Acting Chief Judge of the old Anambra State.
