Controversies
Controversies During Okezie Ikpeazuโs Tenure as Governor of Abia State (2015โ2023)
1. 2015 Governorship Election Legal Battles
In the aftermath of the April 2015 gubernatorial elections in Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) was declared the winner. However, his victory was contested by Alex Otti of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), citing electoral irregularities.
On December 31, 2015, the Court of Appeal sitting in Owerri annulled Ikpeazu’s election, declaring Otti the rightful winner and ordering his immediate swearing-in. Ikpeazu appealed this decision, and on February 3, 2016, the Supreme Court reinstated him as governor, ruling that the allegations of over-voting and non-compliance with the Electoral Act were unsubstantiated. (PM News Nigeria, Nigeria World)
2. Allegations of Financial Impropriety
In November 2020, investigative reports revealed that between 2016 and 2017, approximately โฆ3.4 billion was transferred from Abia State accounts to three companies owned by Enyinnaya Nwafor, a close associate of Ikpeazu. Additionally, Delhope Resources Ltd, registered as an internet cafรฉ and owned by Innocent Adiele, received contracts worth โฆ412 million. These transactions raised concerns about potential financial misconduct within Ikpeazu’s administration. (Naija News)
3. The โฆ10 Billion Airport Project Controversy
In April 2024, Governor Alex Otti accused his predecessor, Ikpeazu, of allocating โฆ10 billion in September 2020 for the construction of an airport in Abia Stateโa project that was never realized. Otti cited findings from a forensic audit conducted by his administration, which indicated that the funds were disbursed without any tangible progress on the airport project. (allAfrica.com)
Ikpeazu responded to these allegations by asserting that the funds were not diverted and that the contractor involved, Ferrotex, was still engaged in major projects under Otti’s administration. He challenged Otti to provide evidence of any wrongdoing and emphasized that the funds were allocated for legitimate purposes. (The Guardian Nigeria)
These controversies have significantly impacted Ikpeazu’s political legacy, prompting ongoing debates about governance and accountability in Abia State.
