Rich Oganiru
Rich Oganiru was born on May 23, 1957, in Owerri, the capital of Imo State, Nigeria. He got married in 1994 and was a devoted father to two sons. Known for his deep Christian faith, he upheld his spiritual beliefs throughout his personal and professional life. He passed away on August 10, 2021, leaving behind a legacy of passion, resilience, and artistic contribution to Nollywood.

Before his rise in Nollywood, Oganiru served as a naval officer. While he refrained from disclosing his rank or the exact years he served, he noted that entertainment had always been a part of him, even during his military service. While in the Navy, he was active in the music department, which paved the way for his future in showbiz.
🎶 Musical Journey
Rich Oganiru began his entertainment career as a gospel musician, and in 1997, he won the Best Gospel Artiste award at the Nigerian Song Festival (NISOFES). He performed in a group initially, releasing multiple collaborative albums. In his later years, he worked on his solo debut album with plans for release in August, featuring eight tracks that blended country music, reggae, and inspirational gospel. A gifted multi-instrumentalist, he played the saxophone, guitar, and was also a skilled songwriter.
🎬 Nollywood Career
Rich Oganiru joined Nollywood in 1994, debuting in the film “Shattered Dreams”. He quickly established himself with roles in films like “Venom of Justice”, which he personally financed and which starred a young Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde in her first film. Despite early setbacks, he rose through the ranks with grit and dedication.
His breakthrough came with “Rituals”, produced by Kenneth Nnebue, which established him as a household name. He went on to star in over 120 films, including:

He took pride in his ability to speak and act in multiple Nigerian languages — including Yoruba, Hausa, and Igbo — picking up accents and delivering performances with cultural authenticity. This made him one of the most linguistically versatile actors in Nollywood.
💰 Fame Without Fortune
Despite his prolific filmography, Rich Oganiru was candid about his financial challenges. He revealed in interviews that he had not become a millionaire and felt under-compensated for his contributions to the growth of Nollywood. He lamented that many pioneers like himself helped build the foundation that newer stars such as Jim Iyke and Genevieve Nnaji now benefit from.

💔 Personal Life and Family
Rich Oganiru was married in 1994 and had two sons. His wife initially expressed discomfort over romantic roles he played on screen — including caressing or kissing actresses — but eventually grew to understand the nature of his work. Oganiru emphasized that such scenes were strictly professional, noting that he and his co-stars, including Omotola, were not close outside of set.
🚫 Harassment and Controversial Attention
Due to his good looks and celebrity status, Oganiru received attention from female fans—and, shockingly, from male admirers and gay individuals, who occasionally harassed him over the phone. He openly condemned such advances and stated that he confronted them whenever possible.
🛐 Spiritual Transformation
Originally known by his full name Rich Odichinma Azu, he changed his professional name to Rich Oganiru after two pastors advised him to do so, stating that it was God’s instruction. He testified that this change brought about a significant turnaround in his life and career.
🌍 Vision & Legacy
Oganiru’s dream went beyond fame. He aspired to build an empire of excellence in film production, create works that would inspire generations, and use his talent to evangelize through entertainment. He believed that his music and films could heal, uplift, and spiritually transform lives.

🕊️ Death
Rich Oganiru passed away in August 2021 after a prolonged illness. His death marked the end of an era for one of Nollywood’s early legends—an actor who gave his heart to the industry but never truly reaped its material rewards.
