Early Life and Education
Sam Egwu was born on 20 June 1954 in Amofia-Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, Nigeria. He grew up in a modest family, where education was highly valued. His father, Chief Nnaji Egwu, was a respected community leader, while his mother, Madam Ude Egwu, was a trader. He has five siblings, all of whom pursued professional careers.
Egwu attended the renowned University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), where he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture in 1981. He returned to UNN to earn a Master’s degree in Agricultural Education in 1987. Driven by his passion for academics, he later completed a Doctorate in Agronomy at Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT) in 1996. Egwu’s academic achievements laid the foundation for his future career as an educator and policymaker.
Academic and Early Career
Before venturing into politics, Egwu was a senior lecturer at Enugu State University of Technology, where he taught and mentored students in agricultural sciences. His research and teachings focused on agronomy and sustainable agriculture. During this period, he authored several academic papers that contributed to the body of knowledge in his field.
Egwu also served as Commissioner for Education in Ebonyi State. His tenure was marked by significant reforms in the education sector, including improved teacher training programs and the establishment of more schools across rural areas of the state. These efforts earned him recognition as a pillar of educational development.
Governorship (1999–2007)
Egwu was elected the first Executive Governor of Ebonyi State during Nigeria’s transition to democracy in 1999. He won reelection in 2003, serving two terms until 2007. As governor, Egwu prioritized education, healthcare, and infrastructure development. His administration established the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) and expanded access to basic education through free primary and secondary schooling initiatives.
Other notable achievements during his tenure included:
- Construction of rural roads to connect remote communities.
- Establishment of healthcare centers across the state.
- Initiatives to boost agricultural production, particularly rice farming in Ebonyi, which became a key contributor to Nigeria’s rice production.
Minister of Education (2008–2010)
In December 2008, President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua appointed Egwu as Minister of Education. His tenure was characterized by both achievements and challenges. He advocated for improved funding for tertiary institutions and introduced policies to promote technical and vocational education.
However, Egwu’s time as minister was overshadowed by frequent strikes by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) and other university unions. Critics accused him of failing to address the demands of these unions effectively. The strikes led to widespread calls for his removal, and in April 2010, he was replaced by Professor Ruqayyah Ahmed Rufa’i.
Senate Career (2015–Present)
Egwu returned to active politics in 2015 when he successfully contested the Ebonyi North Senatorial seat under the PDP. As a senator, he has focused on industrial development, infrastructure, and education. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Industry, where he has been instrumental in formulating policies to support small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
Controversies and Political Challenges
Egwu’s political career has not been without controversies. In 2008, he was former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s preferred candidate for the position of PDP National Chairman. However, he withdrew at the party’s National Convention in favor of Prince Vincent Ogbulafor. The withdrawal was seen as a strategic compromise to prevent further divisions within the party.
As Minister of Education, his inability to resolve the ASUU strikes drew significant public criticism. Union leaders described his tenure as “unresponsive” to the plight of lecturers and students.
Egwu has also faced intra-party disputes, particularly within the PDP in Ebonyi State. In 2021, he was accused by political opponents of imposing candidates during party primaries, a claim he denied.
